Rules Queries and Refereeing

  1. The MMG event lead (referee) may not be a system expert for every game being played. They will, however, have access to the published rules.
  2. Players must bring and have access to the latest published rules, errata and FAQs relevant to the game system and their specific army or team. These must be made available for reference by themselves, their opponent and the event lead.
  3. Where specialist rules knowledge is required, the event lead may consult one or more experienced, neutral players who are not involved in, or directly affected by, the game in question.
  4. The event lead's ruling is final for that game. To keep the event running to schedule, if a rule cannot be clarified within three minutes, the event lead will make a temporary ruling and play will continue.
  5. Where an event-wide clarification is required for later rounds, it will be communicated consistently to all players before the next round begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Best Coast Pairings (BCP) account?

Yes. All MMG Warhammer 40,000 events and leagues use Best Coast Pairings (BCP) for registrations, pairings, results and standings.

When do I need to submit my army list?

Army lists must be submitted through Best Coast Pairings (BCP) by 23:59 on the Wednesday before the event unless otherwise stated on the event page.

Late list submissions may result in penalties or removal from the event at the organiser's discretion.

Can I change my army list after submission?

No. Once list submission closes, army lists are considered locked.

The organiser may allow corrections to resolve genuine administrative errors, but list changes after the submission deadline are generally not permitted. The exception for leagues is where a Games Workshop rules, points or Codex update affects a list, as explained below.

How are mid-league rules updates and list changes handled?

Each league round is locked when its pairings are published. All games within that round use the army lists, rules, points, FAQs and Balance Dataslate in force at the time the pairings are published.

Any Games Workshop rules or points update released after pairings have been published will take effect from the beginning of the following round.

For the purposes of this policy, an update is considered released when it is publicly available through an official Games Workshop source. The version available when MMG publishes the round pairings determines the rules in force for that round.

Balance Dataslates and Munitorum Field Manuals

If a Balance Dataslate or Munitorum Field Manual is released, impacted lists may be updated before the next round. An impacted list is one where one or more units, Detachments or army rules included in the list have received a rules or points change.

Any updated list must remain within the same faction. Changes under this provision must be reasonably related to the rules or points changes affecting the list. A rules or points update does not provide a general opportunity to rewrite an otherwise unaffected army.

If new points or rules make an existing list illegal, the player must submit a corrected legal list before the next round is paired.

List editing will be unlocked between rounds where applicable. The MMG Referees will announce the submission deadline before the next pairings are generated.

New Codex Releases

When a new Codex is released, players using that faction may rewrite their list to comply with the new Codex, while remaining within the same faction.

To submit a Codex list update, email events@mightymelee.uk with the updated list pasted in full within the email. The subject line must clearly state the league, your name and "Codex List Update".

An MMG Referee will update your league list, and the new list will apply from the beginning of the next round.

List Submission Requirements

All lists must be submitted in a complete format showing all required army selections, including Detachment, wargear choices, attached units, points breakdown and any other selections that must be made for the army.

Once the next round has been paired, lists are locked again and no further changes may be made without approval from the MMG Referees.

Urgent Rules Corrections

MMG reserves the right to apply an urgent Games Workshop erratum, FAQ or rules correction immediately where the MMG Referees consider this necessary to maintain a legal or playable rules environment, even where a round has already been paired.

Any such exception will be announced to all affected players and will apply consistently across the affected games.

Illegal or Incorrect Lists

Players who submit an illegal list will be contacted and given a deadline to correct it. If the list has not been corrected before the player's next game, the MMG Referees may apply an appropriate penalty, including awarding the game to their opponent.

Repeated submission of illegal or incorrect lists may result in further action at the discretion of the MMG Referees.

What rules are used?

MMG Warhammer 40,000 events use Matched Play rules, the current Mission Deck, current army construction rules, and the latest published FAQs and errata available at the time of the event.

What terrain layouts are used?

Terrain layouts are randomly selected from the current Games Workshop Chapter Approved Tournament Companion.

Players should expect Games Workshop tournament-standard layouts and terrain placement throughout the event.

When will I know my first-round opponent?

Round 1 pairings, mission information and terrain layout details are normally published on the MMG Community Discord on the Friday before the event.

Do I need to join the MMG Community Discord?

Yes for leagues and strongly recommended for events.

League administration, game scheduling, pairings, event announcements and important updates are all managed through the MMG Community Discord.

Do my models need to be painted?

No. There's no Grey Shame at MMG. Your army does not need to be fully painted to take part in our Warhammer 40,000 events or leagues.

No additional victory points are awarded for having a fully painted army. We want players to enjoy their games without feeling pressured to rush their painting.

How are league standings decided?

League standings are determined using the following tiebreakers:

  1. Wins
  2. Battle Points
  3. Wins Strength of Schedule (SOS)
  4. Battle Points Strength of Schedule (SOS)
  5. Wins Extended Strength of Schedule (Extended SOS)
  6. Battle Points Extended Strength of Schedule (Extended SOS)
  7. Random determination if still tied

Strength of Schedule (SOS) measures how well your opponents performed during the event or league. Playing against opponents who achieve strong results can improve your SOS score.

What happens if my opponent forfeits a league game?

If a player is awarded a win because their opponent forfeits, withdraws or fails to play their scheduled game, the active player will receive an 85-0 victory.

The forfeiting player will receive a 0-85 loss.

What happens if I receive a bye?

Any bye awarded by the organiser will be scored as an 85-0 victory unless otherwise stated in the event pack.

Why are forfeits and byes scored as 85-0 rather than 100-0?

MMG uses an 85-0 score for forfeits and byes to balance fairness and competitive integrity.

Players who are ready, willing and able to play should receive a strong result when an opponent forfeits or a bye is awarded. However, automatic 100-0 scores can artificially inflate battle point totals and have an outsized impact on league standings and tiebreakers.

An 85-0 result rewards the active player with a significant victory while keeping standings more representative of games actually played on the table.

Can I concede a game?

Players may concede a game. Any concession should be discussed with the organiser and scored in accordance with the event or league pack.

How do I arrange league games?

League games are organised through the MMG Community Discord. Players should contact their opponent promptly after pairings are announced, respond within a reasonable time and offer more than one realistic opportunity to play during the round.

If arranging the game becomes difficult, contact the organiser before the round deadline. When deciding whether reasonable efforts were made, the organiser will consider the timing and content of both players' communication.

What if a game cannot be arranged?

The organiser will review the circumstances and determine the outcome based on both players' communication, availability and efforts to schedule the game.

Contact the organiser before the round deadline if you are experiencing difficulty arranging your game.

Can I use proxies or 3D-printed models?

Reasonable proxies and 3D-printed models may be permitted. They must use the correct base size, be appropriately sized and be clearly identifiable as the unit they represent.

If a model is not immediately recognisable, please send the organiser a photograph for approval before the event. The organiser's decision is final.

Who do I contact if I have a rules question?
