Why We Use FDM 3d Printing for Tabletop Terrain
Share
When people hear “3D printed terrain”, they often assume resin is automatically the best option.
For gaming terrain, that’s simply not the case.
At Mighty Melee Games we deliberately use high-quality FDM filament printing for the vast majority of our terrain because it produces scenery that’s designed to be played on, not just admired.

Built for Gaming
Terrain gets handled. A lot.
It’s picked up between games, nudged by measuring tapes, bumped by dice, packed into storage crates and transported to events.
Unlike resin, FDM printed terrain is much more forgiving. Rather than chipping or shattering when knocked, it stands up to regular tabletop gaming.
That’s one of the reasons it’s the same print specification we trust on the gaming tables at Mighty Melee Games.
Why We Print at 0.20mm
Every layer height is a compromise between detail, strength and production time.
After plenty of testing, we’ve found 0.20mm offers the sweet spot for gaming terrain.
- Excellent tabletop detail
- Strong, durable prints
- Reliable production
- Great value for money
- Faster turnaround times
Could we print finer?
Absolutely.
Would most people notice the difference on a painted gaming table from normal playing distance?
Probably not.
Printing at finer resolutions dramatically increases print times while delivering relatively small improvements for gaming terrain. We’d rather spend those hours printing more terrain for more gamers.

- Incredible Interlayer Bond Strength: Standard 0.4 mm nozzles lay down narrow, delicate lines of plastic. A 0.6 mm nozzle forces out much wider, heavily compressed tracks under high pressure. This deep architectural squish creates a massive mechanical bond between layers, making the final terrain significantly more resistant to splitting when handled roughly.
- Impact-Resistant Exterior Walls: By pairing our 0.20 mm layer height with a 0.6 mm nozzle, our terrain is built with ultra-thick, structurally reinforced outer perimeter shells. It turns what would normally be a fragile plastic model into a dense, rigid structural piece that easily handles continuous tournament play.
- Zero Micro-Gaps for Better Painting: Smaller nozzles are highly prone to microscopic under-extrusion gaps that swallow up your primer and ruin smooth drybrush transitions. The massive flow rate of our 0.6 mm setup ensures solid, completely uniform stone and concrete surfaces that are an absolute joy to paint.
Our Printers
Every piece of terrain we produce is printed on Prusa 3D printers.
Our print farm includes both the Prusa CORE One and the larger Prusa CORE One L, allowing us to produce everything from individual scenery pieces to large terrain sections with the same consistent quality.
We chose Prusa for a simple reason: reliability.
Prusa printers have earned a strong reputation among professional print farms, businesses and serious makers for their dependable operation, excellent print quality and consistent results. When you're manufacturing products for customers rather than just printing the occasional hobby project, consistency matters just as much as print quality.
Every model is carefully prepared before printing. We don't simply press Print – each design is orientated and sliced to maximise strength, surface finish and print reliability.
By investing in professional equipment and proven workflows, we can spend more time producing terrain and less time troubleshooting failed prints, helping us deliver consistent quality and sensible turnaround times.
Designed to Be Used
Gaming terrain isn’t a display miniature.
It needs to survive regular games, transport, storage and enthusiastic players.
Our approach prioritises:
- Durability
- Consistency
- Practicality
- Value
Because terrain should spend its life on the battlefield, not in a display cabinet because you’re worried about breaking it.
The Perfect Hobby Starting Point
We print our terrain in a premium matte grey filament as standard.
It looks fantastic on the tabletop straight out of the box, particularly for industrial, urban and grimdark battlefields, while also providing the perfect canvas for primer, paint and all your hobby magic.
Whether you simply want to unpack it and start playing or create a beautifully weathered centrepiece, our terrain is ready for the job.
Proven on Our Own Tables
The terrain we sell isn’t produced to one standard while we use something different ourselves.
The same print specification is used throughout the gaming tables at Mighty Melee Games and has been tested through countless games by our community.
If it’s durable enough for regular gaming in a busy venue, we’re confident it’ll serve you well at home, at your club or at your next tournament.
Print-on-Demand Terrain at Mighty Melee Games
As well as using this terrain throughout our own venue, we also offer a growing range of print-on-demand terrain for your own gaming table.
We hold commercial licences for the Txarli Factory Battle Builder terrain range, allowing us to professionally manufacture genuine Txarli designs here in the UK.
Our print-on-demand approach means:
- Every order is professionally printed to order
- Consistent quality using the same specification trusted at MMG
- No ageing stock sat on shelves
- A growing catalogue of modular terrain and complete battlefield sets
- UK-based production and support
Whether you’re looking for a full tournament table, a narrative battlefield or a few extra ruins to expand your collection, we’ve got you covered.

Built to Play
At Mighty Melee Games we believe terrain should be:
- Durable enough for years of gaming
- Detailed enough to look fantastic on the tabletop
- Affordable enough to build a complete battlefield
- Ready to paint, or ready to play straight away
That’s why we choose FDM printing and why we print at 0.20mm.
It’s not the finest setting.
It’s not the fastest setting.
It’s simply the one we’ve found delivers the best balance of quality, durability and value for tabletop wargaming.
